Ethnicity, Language, & Religion of Barbados

Ethnicity

Nearly all of Barbados's population is of African descent, most of whose ancestors arrived with the slave trade. Since the people today are primarily descended from slaves, the ethnicity of each person varies greatly. The origin of these slaves is likely West Africa, but specifics are lacking; most people believe the majority of slaves to Barbados came from the modern countries of Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, and Benin. The rest of the people in Barbados today tend to be ethnically European, Indian, or a combination of ethnicities.

Language

English is the only real language of communication in Barbados as nearly everyone is a native speaker and it is the language of choice in schools. However, the accent in Barbados is quite different from most large English speaking countries and more closely resembles the accent in nearby Caribbean countries.

Religion

Nearly 30% of Barbados's population is Anglican Christian, while another 30% adhere to other Protestant religions. Another 20% of the people are either atheist or claim no particular religion.

The Anglican Church is a protestant religion. Like all Christian and protestant faiths, Anglicans believe there is one God and that His son, Jesus is the savior and forgiver of sins. Anglicans also believe that the Bible, which includes the Old and New Testaments, is the only true word of God. It is generally in the interpretation of the Bible that protestant religions vary and this is true in the case of Anglicanism.
