Geography, Weather, & Wildlife of the Czech Republic

Geography

The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in the middle of Central Europe. The Czech Republic borders Germany (west), Austria (south), Slovakia (southeast), and Poland (north).

Geographically, the Czech Republic is somewhat elevated, although not especially mountainous. From east to northwest is a very fertile valley where the Elbe River flows. Prague and a number of other large cities lie in the Elbe River valley and this region is home to a very high population density as crops can be easily grown and transportation has always been accessible. Likewise, the high elevation throughout the rest of the country is not a true obstacle as there are few regions that are truly alpine and the water drainage from the mountains allows agriculture. The tallest of these mountains form the country's borders with Germany in the northwest and southwest, Austria in the south, and Poland in both the northeast and north. Except in small pockets, much of this higher elevated land is densely populated, although not in comparison to the Elbe River regions.

Weather

Landscape

The Czech Republic's seasons are very distinct. Winters (December-February) can be cold and covered in snow, with average temperatures in the mountains of about 15-20˚ F (-8˚ C). Prague and the lowlands typically remain at about 25-30˚ F (-5˚ to 0˚ C) during these months. Summers tend to be hot as Prague has daily highs typically reaching 85˚F (29˚ C).

Wildlife

Czech Wildlife - Wild boar

The Czech Republic has a number of mammals in their varied landscape from big to small, including bears, wolves, marmots, and minks. Sea life on the other hand is almost non-existent as the landlocked country only has a few significant rivers or lakes.

While there are a large number of migrating birds that stopover in the Czech Republic, the country is home to a large number of birds that call the country permanent residence, such as pheasants and partridges.
