Ethnicity, Language, & Religion of Ecuador

Ethnicity

Almost three quarters of Ecuador's population is mestizo, or a combination of European and indigenous descent. The rest of the people are of various ethnic groups, including wholly European, wholly Amerindian, partly African, and Montubio (a group of people of various ethnicities who identify as a single group).

One of the larger indigenous groups in Ecuador is the Shuar, who live in the Amazon basin. Another significant group are often referred to as Quechua, although this is more accurately a linguistic group; most of the Quechua in Ecuador prefer to be called Kichwas.

Language

Spanish is the only official language in Ecuador, but there are a couple widely spoken indigenous languages, including both Quechua and Shuar. Spanish is a Romance language also spoken in Spain; it is closely related to other Romance languages, including Portuguese, Italian, French, Romanian, others. The dialect of Spanish in Ecuador is quite distinct in comparison to that of Spain and there are also many minor differences in the language across Latin America.

Quechuan is a language family of South America, primarily found in the Andes Mountains. There are numerous languages that are included in this language family, but all are similar and over 2 million people speak some form of this language in Ecuador today. Shuar, which goes by many names, is only found in the Amazon basin and the number of speakers of this language is quite limited, but in some areas is the primary means of communication.

Religion

Nearly everyone in Ecuador is nominally Roman Catholic, but only a percentage of those people are regularly practicing. This huge percentage of Catholics in the country is a result of Spanish colonization as Spain is primarily Catholic.

Catholicism is a Christian religion that is one of the first Christian religions and was the most dominant religious force in the Christian world for years. Catholicism believes that there is a single God who created everything, a savior, the son of God, Jesus Christ who is the forgiver of sins, and there is the Holy Spirit, which makes up the last part of the Holy Trinity.
