Relationships, Marriage, & Family Life in the Federated States of Micronesia

Any sort of public display of affection is off limits in the Federated States of Micronesia so dating is done quite secretly. This may mean meeting late at night or dating with a chaperone. No matter the dating style, once a couple decides to progress their relationship the man is expected to gain permission from the woman's family before they can marry.

Marriage is truly a joining of families and individuals as community and family are very important in the Federated States of Micronesia. Marriage brings two families together and these families will often maintain a close relationship throughout their lives due to a marriage between the families. A marriage also symbolizes a couple's entry into members of the community as adults and with that, they are expected to become a part of the community. One aspect of this is to have children and there is no shortage of kids in the country as the average couple has two or three children, but many families have even more kids than that.
