Ethnicity, Language, & Religion of Luxembourg

Ethnicity

Although the majority of the population of Luxembourg is ethnically Luxembourger, there is a huge population of immigrants in the country as well, the largest among them being the Portuguese. The Luxembourgers are a combination of a number of ethnicities, but most closely related to the Germanic Franks from centuries past. This makes them genetically related to both the Germans and French to varying degrees.

Language

Luxembourg has three official languages; Luxembourgish is considered the national language while both German and French are considered administrative languages. Most official government documents are written in French, while German is the most common oral language in the media. Luxembourgish is most of the population's native language and the most common language among locals. Luxembourgish is similar to German and is considered a German language, but also has many connections with French, including the use of numerous French words and phrases.

Both English and Portuguese are also widely spoken in Luxembourg. In fact, many people in Luxembourger are fluent in a number of languages, which usually include Luxembourgish, German, French, and English, if not more.

Religion

Most of Luxembourg's population is Catholic, including most of the Portuguese immigrants. There are also other religions practiced, primarily by the other immigrant groups.

Catholicism is a Christian religion that is one of the first Christian religions (founded after the death of Jesus in about 30-33 AD). Catholicism believes that there is a single God who created everything, a savior, the son of God, Jesus Christ who is the forgiver of sins, and there is the Holy Spirit, which makes up the last part of the Holy Trinity. Catholics follow the teachings of the Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments. Much of the faith is based on the life and teachings of Jesus, which is found in the gospels (in the New Testament).
