Ethnicity, Language, & Religion of Monaco

Ethnicity

Most of the people of Monaco are ethnically French, although there is a significant Italian minority. Despite these ethnic definitions, many people in Monaco claim to be "Monegasque," which isn't a distinct ethnicity, rather is a term used to describe someone born in Monaco, so can include someone who is ethnically Italian, French, or something else. The ethnic French are primarily a combination of Celts, Latins, and Germanic peoples, while the Italians are a combination of numerous historic peoples on the peninsula and are often considered to be Latin.

Language

The official language of Monaco is French, although Italian and English are commonly spoken both in business and in everyday transactions among the people and tourists alike. Being a very highly educated country, many people speak all three languages, or at least have a conversational understanding of a couple of them.

Religion

Nearly the entire population of Monaco is Catholic. Catholicism is a Christian religion that is one of the first Christian religions (founded after the death of Jesus in about 30-33 AD). Catholicism believes that there is a single God who created everything, a savior, the son of God, Jesus Christ who is the forgiver of sins, and there is the Holy Spirit, which makes up the last part of the Holy Trinity. Catholics follow the teachings of the Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testaments. Much of the faith is based on the life and teachings of Jesus, which is found in the gospels (in the New Testament).
