Social Life in Romania

Behavior

The Romanians are very well aware of the world around them as well as the differences in opinions and behaviors. Because of this they are quite understanding of various cultures and foreigners so odd behaviors are generally accepted (but not encouraged).

Your behavior should begin with modesty as being loud, rude, showing off wealth, or dressing provocatively will get you stares. Likewise, placing yourself above others or boasting is viewed negatively.

As a visitor to Romania, just try to follow the lead of the locals by dressing in like manner (see below for details), dining in the local etiquette (see our Romania Dining & Food Page), and avoid sensitive conversation topics, such as politics, finances, and business unless initiated by your local counterpart.

Dress

The traditional dress in Romania varied from town to town and from region to region, but the styles had numerous similarities throughout the country. Most men wore white pants, a white shirt, black boots, and a vest, which was generally on a black or white base, but also generally included vast amounts of embroidery in numerous colors, but often including red. Women traditionally wore loose-fitting white shirts and skirts in white or black with a vest or apron over the top. These aprons and vests were also embroidered and again often included the color red on a white or black base. Women also traditionally wore a handkerchief of some sort to cover their hair.

Today the traditional dress of Romania is all but gone, although it may be seen at some cultural events and celebrations; more commonly, it can be seen at tourist sites. Nearly everyone in Romania today wears modern western-styled clothing. As a visitor to Romania, you should wear the same western-styled clothing, but what specifically should be determined by the situation as churches and other formal settings require more conservative clothing, while the beaches can be much more liberal, although nowhere in Romania is the dress or are the people too liberal, so if in doubt fall on the side of being conservative.
