Ethnicity, Language, & Religion of St. Kitts & Nevis

Ethnicity

The ethnic makeup of the people in St. Kitts & Nevis is difficult to define. Most people are either entirely of African descent or a majority African, many of whose ancestors arrived with the slave trade. The slaves who were transported to St. Kitts & Nevis were primarily from West Africa, although these people came from numerous parts of both Western an Southern Africa. There are also a number of minority groups, including English, Portuguese, and Lebanese.

Language

English is the only official language in St. Kitts & Nevis. Nearly everyone on St. Kitts & Nevis is a native English speaker and many have a strong Caribbean accent. There are few native non-English speakers on the islands, but those that do live in the country often learn English as the primary means of communication.

Religion

Anglican Christian is the most common religion in St. Kitts & Nevis although other Protestant religions and Roman Catholicism are also practiced in smaller numbers.

The Anglican Church is a protestant religion. Like all Christian and protestant faiths, Anglicans believe there is one God and that His son, Jesus is the savior and forgiver of sins. Anglicans also believe that the Bible, which includes the Old and New Testaments, is the only true word of God. It is generally in the interpretation of the Bible that protestant religions vary and this is true in the case of Anglicanism.
