Ethnicity, Language, & Religion of St. Lucia
Ethnicity
Most of St. Lucia's population is of African descent, many of whose ancestors were brought over with the slave trade. Most of the slaves that arrived to St. Lucia came from the modern countries of Nigeria, Cameroon, Central Africa, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon, although slaves came from various parts of Western and Southern Africa. There are also smaller groups of ethnic American Indians as well as others living in St. Lucia today.
Language
English is the only official language in St. Lucia and is a popular native language on the island. However, French patois is also spoken by many on the island; this language is similar to French, but has various introductions from other languages, including English. Despite the linguistic divide, English is generally the language of communication between groups.
